Do you need a lot of capital to start a plumbing hustle in Kenya?
From Rotich’s experience with proper skills, one can hire tools and they are good to start if capital is not available fully.
His journey as a plumber began when a friend supported him with a plumbing machine worth about KSh 20,000. “I was given a plumbing machine of about 20k by a friend,” he explains.
With this tool, he started taking small jobs in Bureti, proving that even small support can unlock a whole business.
His first customers came from nearby areas in Bureti, karibu na kwetu. Some found him on Facebook, others reached him through phone calls. These early clients helped him build trust and spread the word.
To keep customers coming back, Rotich focuses on two things:
1️⃣Giving good service that satisfies them.
2️⃣Offering affordable prices.
This approach keeps people returning and recommending him to others.
Rotich enjoys his hustle because it provides daily income and helps him grow in a practical skill. But like any business, he faces challenges.
His machine was once damaged because of excess power supply, and high transport costs can sometimes make work difficult. Still, he remains determined.
Through MESH, his business has expanded and has learned more about promoting his skills, hustle and how to talk to customers. “Nime gain some of the experience that I didn’t have like marketing and talking to customers,” he says.
