KRA Reintroduces Tax Amnesty Programme for Interest, Penalties and Fines
The Kenya Revenue Authority has officially reintroduced the Tax Amnesty Programme under the Finance Act, 2026.
The programme is designed to ease the financial burden on taxpayers by waiving 100% of penalties, interest and fines on eligible tax debts that accrued up to 31st December 2025.
The amnesty officially started on 1st July 2026 and will remain open until 31st December 2026.
KRA says the programme builds on previous tax amnesty initiatives that helped recover over KSh 80.9 billion in principal tax payments while enabling thousands of taxpayers to regularize their tax affairs.

Who Qualifies for the 2026 KRA Tax Amnesty?
The biggest beneficiaries are taxpayers with tax liabilities that arose before 1st January 2026.
If you already paid your principal tax by 31st December 2025 but penalties and interest are still showing on your account, you automatically qualify for a full waiver.
You do not need to submit any application.
Once all outstanding tax returns are filed, KRA will automatically waive the eligible late filing penalties.

What If You Still Owe Principal Tax?
If you still have unpaid principal tax that accrued before 2026, you can still benefit from the amnesty.
All you need to do is pay the outstanding principal during the amnesty period. Once the principal is cleared, the corresponding interest and penalties will be waived.
Who Does Not Qualify?
Not every tax debt falls under this programme.
Tax obligations arising on or after 1st January 2026 are excluded from the amnesty.
This means any taxes generated from 2026 onwards must be paid together with any applicable penalties and interest.
You'll first need to resolve the dispute through the Alternative Dispute Resolution framework before qualifying for the amnesty benefits.
