What We Learned from Promoting MESHERS
The Do’s, Don’ts, and What Really Makes Customers Buy.
Promoting MESHERS this year gave us a front-row seat to what works and what doesn’t when young businesses try to attract customers.
From Instagram posts to WhatsApp broadcasts and Google searches, one thing became very clear: customers don’t buy because your business exists, they buy because your offer is clear, trustworthy, and easy to act on.
Here’s a breakdown of the biggest lessons we learned, including the key do’s and don’ts that every small business in Kenya should know.

1. Clear Offer = Faster Decisions
DO: Clearly state what you are selling and who it is for. Businesses that performed best had a simple, direct offer. Customers don’t want to guess. A clear offer reduces confusion and builds confidence instantly.
DON'T: Assume people already understand your business, product or service.
2. Clear Price Builds Trust
DO: Share your price or at least a price range. Sellers who post prices openly received more serious inquiries. Price transparency filters out window shoppers and attracts buyers who are ready to pay.
DON'T: Hide prices ama kusema “DM for price” on every post. Hii hu-create friction and signals uncertainty. Many customers wanaweza tu scroll posts zako.
3. Clear Contact
DO: Make it extremely easy to reach you. Share one or two active contacts, a WhatsApp number, Instagram handle, or direct call option. Repetition matters. Customers shouldn’t hunt for how to reach you.
DON'T: Post today, disappear tomorrow. Lazima ukue active kila siku. Slow replies or inactive numbers hu-kill trust haraka. If you’re promoting or selling, be ready to respond.
4. Clear Location Reduces Doubt
DO: Say where you are based, even if you deliver nationwide.Customers feel safer buying when they know your physical location or operating area. “Based in Nairobi, deliveries countrywide” perform better than no location at all.
DON'T: Avoid location details completely. Lack of location raises red flags, especially for online businesses.
5. Show Proof of Sale if possible
DO: Show real proof ya kitu una sell or offer, testimonials, reviews, photos, or videos. Customers hu-trust other customers. Even one genuine review can outperform a flashy graphic.
DON'T: Overpromise or exaggerate results. Trust once broken is hard to rebuild.
6. Consistency
DO: Show up regularly with the same message. Keep posting or repeating your offer, price, and contact over time to build familiarity. People buy from what feels familiar.
DON'T: Don't post today and disappear for weeks. Regular posting shows you are reliable and open for business.
Promoting MESHERS ilitu-remind marketing is not about hype, ni about clarity.
A clear offer, clear price, clear contact, and clear location remove fear from the buying process.
Uki combine na consistency, customers watakua far more likely ku-choose ku-buy kutoka kwako.
For any small business looking to grow, clarity isn’t optional, it’s your strongest sales tool.
