Dear fresh college students, please stop taking managerial courses like Human Resource Management. The main job of HR is managing and supervising other staff. Which means they're already up there in the corporate ladder. It's not an entry level course. Who will you supervise when you're just a green entrant? You need to be supervised yourself!
Only take a course like this if you have a solid plan that makes it necessary, like starting your own business and it's the knowledge you willl need to manage your own staff.
The same case applies to Business Management and Project Management. It's management I mean, just like the name suggests. Nobody graduates fresh from college as a manager. These courses were originally designed to provide additional competency for people already in the market. A person who has a rank or a well to do business can study a diploma in business administration by the side, or the popular MBA.
Better to choose a course that is both in your strength zone and which can give you an opportunity to enter at the bottom of the corporate ladder, or entry level jobs. Things like ICT, Film and production, most of the hands-on courses in TVET institutions like masonry, building and construction.
Do not take TV journalism unless you intend to start your own TV on Tiktok. And you don't need such expensive training to do Tiktok, do you. Most TV personalities did not study it as a major. They practised it by the side while growing another career. That's what you do with hit-and-miss careers. You build them by the side without putting your whole weight on them until you find a breakthrough.
Lastly, those who want to do nursing should remember that nursing means basically taking care of sick people. Washing them, dressing their wounds, taking away their human waste, feeding them. I say this because many of you can't stand blood but you still talk about nursing.
Luckily though, nursing has over 10 different areas you can choose from: pediatric nurse, critical care or working at the ICU, maternity nursing, caring for the aged, on and on.
Sick people don't always appreciate help. Many are hostile or uncooperative because of their pain and desperation. You must be passionate enough to work without appreciation.
Nursing is paid 20 times better abroad than here. So if have a chance to fly overseas by all means consider it. And there you can be a nurse assistant with only a certificate and earn better than a full-time graduate nurse working at a level 5 facility here. Sadly. But you should also factor cost of living and investment opportunities.
Also, before you leave, think about marriage and the dynamics of dating from abroad and brace for it. There you'll be a minority which will mean different dynamics and fewer choices. Courtesy; ©️ Benjamin Zulu Global Nipashe Campus Flavour
