Hi everyone. Suicide trends globally are worrying, particularly with the current struggles. Statistics from WHO estimates Kenya crude suicide rate at 6.1 per 100,000 population with age standardized suicide rate 11.0 per 100,000 population which translates to about 4 suicide deaths per day . In 2024, Kenya is facing a number of challenges related to depression and mental health, including: Prevalence Depression is common in Kenya, with 42% of people seeking primary care for severe depression. The national prevalence of common mental disorders is about 10.3%, and in Nandi County, almost half of the population has experienced a mental disorder. Treatment gap There is a 75% treatment gap for mental disorders in Kenya, due in part to low mental health literacy among primary healthcare workers. Stigma Fear of stigmatization and societal expectations can make it difficult for people to discuss their mental health with others, including doctors. Workplace mental health An estimated 3.7 million of Kenya's 24.9 million workforce may have a mental health condition.
