POLICE INVITATIONS 101 If you receive a call or an invitation to come to the police station because a case has been reported against you, take note of the following before you go:
- Don't turn down the invitation. Tell them you will come to honour the invitation.
- Don't go alone. I repeat, don't go alone. Go with an adult who can quickly bail you out in case you are invited, and would be detained for a bailable offéñce. 3. Get in touch with a lawyer immediately you receive the invitation so the lawyer will go with you, ensure you are not intimidated and process your bail. 4.Don't go on a Friday. If you are invited on a Thursday or Friday, politely tell them you will honour the invitation on Monday. If you must go on a Friday, go in the morning and remember to go with an adult and a lawyer. This is because bail is usually not granted on Fridays. If you are arrested on a Friday afternoon, you stand a high chance of staying in police cell till Monday before you can be bailed.
- Before you write a statement, narrate your version of the story to the lawyer first, so the lawyer will direct you on what to write and what not to write. Importantly, avoid Friday invitations to avoid spending your weekend in police cell.
