Eti kukiwa na fullmoon, catch za omena hupungua. Kukiwa na full moon, omena(tiny fish) hutapakaa kila mahali baharini, making it hard kuzishika. Lakini wakati wa giza(no moon), wavuvi huwasha taa mahali moja na omena zinakusanyika hapo, making it easier to catch them all at once. This fact, coupled with overfishing, huweza kusababisha shortages na price hikes kwa soko juu ya hiyo high demand vs low availability.

A friend from HomaBay told me this fact when I complained of increasing costs na shortages za omena. Kipimo kidogo(small tin) of omena now goes for 70 bob, a few weeks ago ilikuwa inauzwa 50 bob.

Traditional omena fishing thrives during dark, moonless nights (the new moon phase) when artificial lights successfully pool the fish together.
