"Since you work in computers, can you just look at my phone quickly?"
If you work in tech in Kenya, you have heard this at a wedding, a funeral, and once in a matatu.
Quickly is never quick.
It starts with a slow phone. Then you find 11,000 photos, 4 apps nobody remembers installing, and a storage warning that has been ignored since 2022.
Then comes the printer. Then the cousin's laptop. Then the question about why Facebook is asking for a code.
Here is what I have learned. People are not trying to take advantage. They just do not know who else to ask, and a trusted person who understands tech is rare.
So the real gap is not skills. It is that most people have nobody to call when a small tech problem shows up.
Help where you can, because it builds trust. But also learn to say, "This one needs proper time. Let us book it." Free help and real work are two different things.
What is the strangest "quick tech favor" you have ever been asked for?
