Sometimes I wonder how many IT professionals get judged by what they can remember in an interview rather than what they can actually do.
I’m an IT guy who has ventured into software engineering, AI, automation, and other areas of technology. But I’ll be honest, there are times I can sit in front of a tough quiz on networking, troubleshooting, or technical support and not get every answer right.
That doesn’t mean I can’t do the job.
Technology is too broad for anyone to remember every command, configuration, protocol, or solution off the top of their head.
What matters to me is knowing how to approach a problem.
Give me a real technical issue and I know how to investigate it, search for the right information, test possible solutions, troubleshoot what is failing, and keep going until I understand what is actually happening.
That is what working in IT has taught me.
We are not walking databases.
Sometimes the most valuable skill is not knowing the answer immediately. It is knowing how to find the answer and solve the problem.
So yes, I may fail a few tough technical quizzes.
But put the actual problem in front of me.
Let me work on it.
