The upsurge in internet usage and technological advancement has made it easier to share audio-visual content that can be of great harm to children.
With the extended school holidays, are parents and guardians aware of the audio-visual content that children are watching on TV, the internet and other broadcasting channels?
As the Government agency mandated to regulate film and broadcast content, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), calls upon parents and caregivers to monitor content that children under their care are accessing on social media platforms and other broadcast channels and guide them appropriately.
In line with our consumer advisory role, the KFCB, a State Corporation, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders on initiatives geared towards protecting minors from exposure to inappropriate audio-visual content.
It is significant to note that parental monitoring and guidance of childrenโs television viewing and internet consumption, as well as social media usage is an indispensable family practice that aids children in understanding the messages they find in diverse programmes and online content.
Additionally, parents play a critical role in monitoring and guiding their children's media consumption, as well as online activities. This may include setting time limits for internet and social media use, discussing the potential risks of harmful content, and encouraging open dialogue about their online experiences.
Remember, protecting children from exposure to inappropriate media content is a crucial and collective responsibility.
