Mostly, they work best during sales and negotiations. There will be people out there willing to anchor you to a big price so that when you get surprised, they give a more favorable smaller price.
In this case, the second price will seem smaller and favorable to you because your mind was anchored to an expensive amount first. Remember that the seller had in mind the second price even before talking to you but he or she used a simple trick to soften your mind and get what they want. This is the anchoring effect!
