To start an M-Pesa business, you have two options:
- Standard Outlet
- Sub-dealer
For a Standard Outlet, it is recommended to follow the process below:
- Register a limited company in business for at least 6 months and have at least three outlets ready to offer M-Pesa services.
- Have a minimum of 100,000 Ksh for each M-Pesa outlet.
- Provide Safaricom with business permits for each M-Pesa outlet, VAT and tax certificates, Ids, banking licenses from reputable financial institutions, and police clearance certificate.
- Fill in the M-Pesa agent head office application form and the M-Pesa agent store application form.
- Once you have submitted your forms and met all the requirements, you’ll be given a till number to use.
The second option is running an M-Pesa business as a Sub-dealer, which has a simpler and quicker process. You will need to work under a licensed M-Pesa agent by purchasing their M-Pesa line for around 7000-10000 Ksh, depending on your agreement. The licensed agent may ask for your ID and location. For Sub-dealers, you need a float of 20,000 Ksh, so you will need roughly 30,000 to 40,000 Ksh to become an M-Pesa agent Sub-dealer.
Basically becoming an M-Pesa Sub-dealer saves you the hustle and tousle of many requirements.
