TODAY’S ADVICE TO FARMERS: STOP FARMING ON ASSUMPTIONS

Farming is not just about planting, applying fertilizer and waiting for harvest. Every decision on the farm should have a reason.

Before planting your next crop, ask yourself:

1... What is the market? Don’t plant simply because everyone else is planting. Know who will buy, what quality they need and when demand is highest.

2.. Do I understand my soil? Soil testing can help you know what nutrients are available and what needs correction. Avoid applying fertilizers blindly.

3..Is this crop suitable for my area? Consider rainfall, temperature, water availability, soil type, pests and diseases before investing.

4... Have I calculated my production costs? Record expenses for seed, fertilizer, pesticides, labour, irrigation, transport and other inputs. You cannot know whether you are making money if you don't know what the crop cost you.

5... Am I monitoring the farm regularly? Walk through your crops. Look at the leaves, soil moisture, pests
