WALK THROUGH A KENYAN RANCH
Lessons learnt from a seasoned farmer and cattle/ horse rancher- the Legendary Uncle Fred Obachi Machoka.
-
Never be afraid to start small-he started in 1993 by planting trees in an arid and bare land. The ranch is now 10 acres of rich greenery and foliage.
-
Don't expect instant results- he had to replant his seedlings after they were attacked by termites. In a dry land, he had to transport large gallons of water from AthiRiver to irrigate the land before he dug a borehole.
-
The growth might be small but steady, he says at first very few revellers used to frequent his ranch, sometimes only 2-5 customers a weekend. But today, on Fri-Sun the ranch is packed to full capacity!
-
Take advantage of your several income-streams:- He has learnt to monetise these sections of the farm/ranch:- a. Accomodation Package-for seminars, workshops , farm-staycations b. Farm tours for families and schools-charged per head c. Dining and Wining experience d. Swimming Pool Facilities e. Playground activities f. Entertainment- Music, Guest Artists g. Leasing the grounds for Weddings and Team-Building Activities h. Organic Farm and Animal produce for sale to the public-milk, vegetables, fruits, herbs, organic fertiliser & pesticides.
