How musyoka turned cooking kdf & mandazi into a business

In Ongata Rongai, Musyoka Maithya has made a name for himself with a growing baking business that provides freshly made cakes, mandazi, donuts, half cakes, and KDFs.
Musyoka’s journey began with Ksh 15,000, money he had saved. “Nilijipanga na hizo pesa kidogo and decided to start small,” he recalls. With that capital, he bought ingredients and basic supplies and set out to try his hand in business.
For him, this biz is not just about baking, it is a lifeline. “This business helps me with the upkeep of my family. That is what motivates me every single day,” he explains.
His first customers were shop owners in his neighbourhood. They accepted his products because of the quality and freshness. He quickly learned that perfection matters in business. “Ukitoa kitu safi, watu hurudi.
That’s why my customers keep coming back, by consistently focusing on quality, he has built loyalty and trust,” he says.

The hustle has given him more than income, it has given him independence. “The money is good. I can pay my bills and I’m planning to reach a bigger market,” Musyoka says.
Like any other biz in Kenya, his has not been without challenges.
The biggest headaches are power outages and the high cost of electricity, both of which directly affect production. “Stima ikipotea, kazi husimama, and that makes things really tough,” he admits.
Despite these obstacles, Musyoka remains motivated. “MESH has inspired me to keep pushing. Seeing stories of other youths shows me I’m not alone in this struggle. It gives me energy to move forward,” he explains.
Musyoka’s advice to other MESHERS is: “As a business person, you only need to be determined. Ukijituma and stay consistent, results will eventually come.” Connect with Musyoka on MESH.
