Is Pig Farming Profitable?

In Nangoma, Douglas is shaping the future of his family through pig farming.
For him, this is not just a hustle, it is a long-term investment that he believes will secure tomorrow.
“I’m working for the future family,” he shares, explaining the main purpose behind his daily grind.
His hustle focuses on keeping domestic animals like pigs as well as providing breeding services.
The inspiration came from his desire to build something solid.

How Much Capital Do You Need to Start?
Douglas began small, raising KSh 50,000 as starting capital. The money came from consistent savings, “nlisave mdogo mdogo” until he had enough to buy his first animals and set up the business.
His first customers came through friends and even friends of friends, who trusted him because of personal referrals. That trust opened the first doors and gave him a foundation to grow.
For Douglas, customers are the heart of the hustle. To keep them loyal, he focuses on offering quality products and reliable services.
Sometimes he gives discounts, and that small gesture helps build trust. “Trust and affordability are the backbone of this business,” he explains.
What he enjoys most is that “ina deal poa poa.” To him, it is a fair hustle that balances well, giving steady income while also building a legacy.
Each sale or new project feels like a step closer to the secure future he is working toward. Apart from pigs, he also keeps chicken.
Ways to make money with pig keeping?
Like any business, the livestock keeping has challenges. At times, animal feeds and other supplies run out in the market, creating shortages.
This makes it difficult to sustain the animals and meet customer demand. Douglas admits these challenges have forced him to plan better and think ahead.
There are several ways to earn from pig keeping:
● Selling pork directly to butchers, hotels, or customers.
● Selling Piglets-piglets are always in demand by new farmers and restocking farms.
● Breeding quality sows or boars.
Joining MESH has helped him to think bigger and smarter. “Napanuliwa akili kwa biz,” he says.
