One Bale of Mtush and a Dream Changed Dennis's Life

Dennis Kamau is blending fashion demands from his customers to serve a diverse community.
Dennis runs a clothing business where he sells both grade one mtush and brand new clothes to his customers in Lolgorian, in Narok.
Hii idea ya combine both types of clothes ilikam from understanding customers wake poa. “Watu huku kwetu wako na lifestyles tofauti. Wengine wanaweza afford mpya, wengine wanaprefer mtush. Nikaona ni mix,” Dennis says.
That way, no matter who walks into his stall, they leave with something.
Dennis started with just one bale of mtush. He got his first capital from saving while working at a construction mjengo job he was doing as a casual worker. “Wasee husema, journey inaenda far, huanza na ka-step jamo,” he believes.

To find customers, Dennis didn’t wait for people to come to town. He went deep into the interior villages where access to quality clothes was hard. “Nilitembea hadi kwao. Huko ndani ndani, walikuwa wanahitaji manguo za maboyz, na mimi nikaamua kuwapelekea,” he said.
How does he keep his customers? "Language baaana 😂..always appreciate customer even if ajanunua always give him/her a reason to always come back 😂.” Dennis says. He’s also flexible with prices and always ready to negotiate.
This busines has done more than put food on the table. It helped pay medical bills for his late grandmother, supports his orphaned cousin in school, and takes care of his family. “Hii biz ni ndogo, but inanifanya nismile kila siku,” he says proudly.
But it’s not always smooth. Dennis says competition is tough. “Wengine hawana responsibilities mingi, wengine wanapata stock cheaper juu ya connections. So tunakimbizana na ka-profit saa zingine huwa small,” he explains.

Since joining MESH, things have changed for the better. He’s learned how to manage his business better and find new ideas.
“Mesh nayo imeniokolea via kupanganisha job plus kuona beyond my area coz pia nmeona watu wanafanya shugli kama yangu but like now nmeanza kufkirua Ku refill perfumes apa tu kwa zabe yangu ... something I learnt from mesh”
